SA expertise sought in Russia
South African expertise in hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup is in demand in Russia. Pieter Cronjé, former Communication Director of the City of Cape Town, now independent consultant, is one of a panel of experts from six countries participating in an international conference in Saransk, one of Russia’s host cities for their upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2018.
Cronjé is presenting two papers on South Africa’s and Cape Town’s World Cup event and is part of a conference panel. He is also part of the media conference of Vice-chairman and Minister of Special Programmes of the Mordovian Government, Alexey Merkushkin, who is hosting the conference entitled: “Hospitality and Tourism Industry – Organisers’ Experience in World Sports Tournaments.”
Other conference speakers are from Spain, Germany, Russia, Britain and France. This is Cronje’s second visit to Russia. In October 2013 he was invited by FIFA to present at a workshop in Kazan for the eleven Russian host cities where the 2018 tournament matches will be played. The year before FIFA invited him to do the same for Brazilian World Cup host cities in Cuiabá.
Says Cronjé: “It is gratifying that the success of South Africa’s World Cup is acknowledged and our experience and advice sought. With four years to go, Russia and its host cities are all very busy with infrastructure, logistics, hospitality and legacy programmes. With a television audience of half the world’s population, the World Cup presents a unique, powerful and international opportunity to change negative perceptions about a country in a positive way. Germany was regarded as friendly and welcoming and South Africa as capable and a great destination after their respective World Cups in 2006 and 2010.”

SA kundigheid in aanvraag in Rusland
Suid-Afrikaanse kundigheid uit die aanbied van die 2010 FIFA Wêreldbeker is in aanvraag in Rusland. Pieter Cronjé, voormalige Kommunikasiedirekteur van Stad Kaapstad en nou onafhanklike konsultant, is deel van ’n paneel van kundiges uit ses lande wat deelneem aan ’n internasionale konferensie in Saransk, een van Rusland se gasheerstede vir die volgende FIFA Wêreldbeker in 2018.
Cronjé doen twee aanbiedings oor Suid-Afrika en Kaapstad se Wêreldbekertoernooi en is deel van ’n besprekingspaneel. Hy is ook deel van die mediakonferensie van Ondervoorsitter en Minister vir Spesiale Projekte van die Regering van Mordovië, Alexey Merkushkin. Hy is die gasheer vir die konferensie “Gasvryheid en die Toerismebedryf – Die Ondervinding van Organiseerders van Wêreldsporttoernooie.”
Ander konferensiesprekers is van Spanje, Duitsland, Rusland, Brittanje en Frankryk Dit is Cronjé se tweede besoek aan Rusland. In Oktober 2013 het FIFA hom genooi om aan te bied by ’n werkswinkel in Kazan vir die elf gahseerstede vir 2018. Die jaar tevore het FIFA hom genooi om deiselfde te doen in Cuiabá, Brasilië
Cronje sê: “Dit is verblydend dat die sukses van Suid-Afrika se Wêreldbeker erken word en ons ondervinding en advies benodig word. Met vier jaar oor is Rusland en sy gasheerstede druk besig met programme vir infrastruktuur, logisitiek, gasvryheid en nalatenskap. Met ’n televisiegehoor van die helfte van die wêreld se bevolking bied die Wêreldbeker ’n unieke, kragtige en internasionale geleentheid om negatiewe sienings oor ’n land positief om te keer. Duitsland word ná sy Wêreldbeker in 2006 beskou as vriendelik en gasvry en Suid-Afrika ná syne as bekwaam en ’n aantreklike bestemming.”
